Students will tour and explore one of the most colorful sections of the Mexican War Streets on Pittsburgh’s North Side to learn about the history of the area, including the creation of Allegheny Commons and the Mexican War Streets, and become familiar with Victorian styles and terminology. Students will learn how preservation strategies were used to reverse neighborhood decline and disinvestment and how imaginative individuals have creatively repurposed historic structures to create the Mattress Factory and City of Asylum/Alphabet City––both nationally recognized centers for the arts––and the artful world of Randyland.
